Learn to Lead (Traditional Climbing)

This session is designed for individuals who have experience with indoor lead climbing and possess some familiarity with outdoor climbing. Typically held at Wilton Quarry near Bolton —a roadside crag offering a range of routes and excellent gear placement opportunities—this course provides practical instruction in traditional protection.

Participants will learn to place their own protection while ascending, using both passive and active gear. Once the lead climber completes the route, the second climber ascends, removing the gear as they are belayed by the leader.

If you enjoy indoor leading and wish to take your skills further in an adventurous setting, this course will challenge your nerve and initiative and can be highly rewarding.

Depending on prior experience, the course includes gear placement practice at ground level before progressing to placements during a lead climb. The instructor will remain beside you throughout, offering guidance and assistance with gear selection and placement. Additional instruction may include following a lead set by the instructor.

Learning to lead opens up extensive opportunities to explore the UK's remarkable climbing landscape, offering limitless possibilities.

Please bring Harness and Helmet. All other equipment will be provided however if you have your own please bring it with you.

Please note: All activities are weather-dependent and may be subject to cancellation, change of venue or postponement.
