If you are new to using Ordnance Survey maps or wish to enhance your navigation abilities, Hill Ascents offers a comprehensive one-day skills course. The course is divided between classroom instruction and practical experience in the hills.
The session is informal, welcoming questions, mistakes, corrections, and learning.
Classroom Session:
- Understanding maps in greater detail, including symbols, features, and colours
- Taking grid references
- Using a compass
- Pacing and timings.
- Plotting a route
- Digital mapping techniques
Afternoon Practical:
In the afternoon, participants will follow the route you plotted in the morning. The course is based in the Norden area, typically utilizing Ashworth Valley. This location offers varied environments for practicing navigation in both developed areas and natural hill and valley settings.
The primary focus of the course is on interpreting maps, recognizing landscape features, and relating map details to your surroundings. Developing this understanding builds confidence in navigation. Additionally, participants will be introduced to modern digital mapping tools using Ordnance Survey software, which includes the use of digital devices during outdoor activities.
What to Bring:
- Sturdy walking shoes or boots
- Suitable clothing for outdoor activities
- Waterproof jacket
- Rucksack
- Packed lunch and drink
- Any necessary medication
All navigation equipment will be provided; however, you are welcome to bring your own compass and local map if you have them.

Please arrive at 9:15 am for a 9.30 start. Please be aware prior to this time will be very busy due to school drop offs.
